Weather MCP
Agents as developers
Developer Pricing
Smarter Weather covers the 50 US states and DC only. Every route that takes a point (lat and lon, zip or location) returns 404 outside-coverage for a point outside the 50 states and DC. /v1/alerts and /v1/observations return it for a bounding box that touches no US domain (CONUS, Alaska, Hawaii); a box that touches one may still include area outside the US. /v1/weather/batch reports it per item as outside_coverage, and /v1/point with points and /v1/series/batch mark such points out_of_domain, as they do a point the check could not reach in time (retry it). If the location lookup is unavailable, the check can briefly fail open. Routes keyed by a station, radar site, forecast office or alert id, and nationwide lists, are not filtered by point, so do not treat an empty result as an all-clear. See Errors.

Rate limits and daily caps
Rate limits and daily caps count requests, per key. The monthly allowance counts credits.
| Plan | Requests/min | Burst | Daily cap (requests per key) | Included per month (credits) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 60 | 30 | 1,000 | — |
| Developer | 600 | 100 | 50,000 | 500,000 |
| Professional | 6,000 | 1,000 | 500,000 | 5,000,000 |
Burst is how many requests you can send at once; it refills at the per-minute rate (this is the RateLimit-Limit header). Daily caps reset at 00:00 UTC; past one, calls return 429 until the reset. Included credits are an allowance: paid plans bill overage, they don't stop. Scale and Enterprise limits are set per contract.
Credits per call
REST calls cost 1 credit; /v1/series/batch costs 1 per location and /v1/weather/batch 1 per call; /v1/catalog is free; a season-cumulative growing-degree-days call costs 2.
MCP tools: 1 credit per call unless listed.
| MCP tool | Credits per call |
|---|---|
| describe_dataset | 0 (free) |
| get_platform_status | 0 (free) |
| list_datasets | 0 (free) |
| search_catalog | 0 (free) |
| get_map_snapshot | 4 |
| get_sounding_chart | 3 |
| get_period_totals | 2.5 |
| find_best_window | 2 |
| get_growing_degree_days | 2 |
| compare_locations | 1.5 |

For agentsNo account, no API key — agents with wallets pay per MCP tool call in USDC on Base via the x402 protocol. Discovery tools are free; paid tools start at $0.01 per call, priced by tool weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a request?
Rate limits and daily caps count requests: every call is one request. Billing counts credits. REST calls are 1 credit; /v1/series/batch is 1 credit per location, /v1/weather/batch is 1 per call, and /v1/catalog is free. MCP tools cost 0 to 4 credits per call by tool weight (see credits per call). REST and MCP draw on one credit allowance.
Can I try before paying?
Yes. The Free plan needs no card, and your first key is a live sw_live_ key: 60 requests/minute and 1,000 requests/day, never billed. For CI, create a sw_test_ key: same endpoints and the same per-key limits as your plan, never billed.
How does overage billing work?
Each paid plan includes a monthly allowance of credits. Anything beyond it bills as metered overage at the plan's posted per-1,000-credit rate, so the allowance never stops your calls; the daily cap does (429 until 00:00 UTC). Only successful responses are billed: errors (any 4xx or 5xx, and MCP tool errors) never are. Overage is added to the next monthly invoice; there's no surprise mid-cycle charge.
Can I change plans anytime?
Yes. Upgrade or downgrade at any time from your dashboard. Changes take effect immediately with prorated billing.
What are the per-minute rate limits?
Free keys get 60 requests/minute and 1,000 requests/day. Developer keys get 600 requests/minute and 50,000 requests/day. Professional keys get 6,000 requests/minute and 500,000 requests/day. Limits apply per key, and daily caps reset at 00:00 UTC. Every response carries RateLimit-* headers (per the IETF rate-limit-headers draft, no X- prefix) so your client can self-throttle; 429s honor Retry-After.
Do you offer enterprise pricing?
Yes. Scale starts from $1,000/month on an annual commitment, billed by invoice. Enterprise is negotiated above Scale: a contractual SLA, SSO and custom limits. Reach us through the contact page or at alex@smarterweather.com.
